This section details preliminary spatial vessel identification data collected from satellite
imagery (Google Earth and Bing) of the Rakhine coastal region, by the University of Exeter.
Consistent scanning of satellite imagery allowed boats to be identified, their locations
recorded and subsequently mapped. Spatial information on vessel locations can be used to
identify landing sites, fishing hotspots, improve fisheries enforcement, management and
Point pattern assessment using KDE of locations of fishing boats
expressed using a low (blue), medium (yellow) and high (red) categorical scale. Selected areas of
interest within the Rakhine coastal region for both (a) and (c) Bing, and (b) and (d) Google Earth.
Parts (a-b) and (c-d) are drawn to different spatial scales.
